당연히, 급작스럽게 행운을 맞거나 예기치 않던 권력과 명성 그리고 인기를 한꺼번에 얻는 사람들은 가장 불안해한다. 환경이 무엇을 주었다면, 다른 환경이 그것을 빼앗을 수 있는 것이며, 행운이 아무 이유없이 왔기 때문에, 또한 이유없이 갈 수도 있는 것이다.

헐리우드가 스타들만큼이나 유명하고 부유하게 된 점성술가들도 덮여 있다는 것은 놀라운 일이 아니다. 연예계가 단순하게 온갖 종류의 사이비 종교와 무척이나 비상식적인 것들로 가득차 있다는 것 또한 놀라운 일이 아니다. 과학자들이 그러한 것들에는 아무 것도 없다는 사실을 설명하여도 소용이 없다. 미신에 빠진자들은 과학에 대해서 전혀 모르며, 안전에 대해 아주 강한 집착을 보이고 있기 때문에, 어떤 경우에도 이성을 받아들이려고 하지 않는다.

그리고 만일 미국 국민이 대통령직에 미신적인 배우를 선출했다면 그들이 얻은 것은 미신적인 대통령일 뿐이다.

It was felt that the changing positions of the sun, moon and planets controlled events on Earth, Bringing about the rise and fall of nations and monarchs, and indicating the fates of every individual, depending on the planetary positions different times. Since the motion of the planets is fixed and predictable, astrology tended to remove God from the fate of people. Thus religious Leaders among Jews, Christians and Moslems have always denounced astrology.

Beginning with Copernicus, scientists began to understand the universe. and to work out the laws of nature that controlled it, It became clear by the time of Newton, three centuries ago , that planetary positions could in no way influence people. Astrology had arisen out of ignorance and continued as nothing more than superstitious fraud.

Yet millions believe in astrology, Why?

Well, we live in an uncertain world. We cannot tell when circumstances might suddenly visit us with disaster. No matter how prosperous and powerful we are, some unforeseen stroke of misfortune may lay us low. for that reason, we seek some way of foretelling the future, some way of guarding ourselves, Astrology offers us the pretense of such knowledge and this is seized on eagerly.

It is not just astrology, There are those who pretend to be able to tell the future by reading palms, or tea leaves, or by dealing with numerology, There are those who try to ensure good luck by carrying rabbits' feet, or horseshoes or "lucky coins." People knock wood and use various other methods of warding off misfortune. All of these silly superstitions are part of the desperate search for security in an insecure world. And of them all astrology seems the most "scientific" because it deals with the stars and because it is filled with mysterious mumbo-jumbo involving the calculation of horoscopes.

Naturally, people who are suddenly struck with good fortune, who gain unexpected power and fame and popularity all at once, are the most insecure. What circumstance have given, other circumstances can take away, and since the good luck came without reason, it might also go without reason.

Many people in show business seem particularly insecure, In show business, it is possible to be an overnight success, to become a millionaire at a stroke; to gain fans, adulation, and incredible power. Think of all the show-business superstitions -no whistling in the dressing room, no hats on the bed, no mention of the play "Macbeth" by name, wishing bad luck ('break a beg") in orer to ensure good luck.

No wonder Hollywood is littered with astrologers who become almost as famous and wealthy as the stars themselves. No wonder the show-business world is simply filled with all sorts of cults and far-out nonsense. It is no use for scientists to explain there's nothing to such things, The superstitious know nothing about science and would, in any case, refuse to accept reason, since they are so wildly intent on security.

And if the American people elect a superstitious actor to the Presidency, what they get it a superstitious president.
