Recently scientists and engineers performed extensive renovations on the legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, sharply reducing its tilt. While that assured that the tower would survive to delight future generations of tourists, the repairs ended its status as leaning-est tower, moving it to somewhere in the middle of the pack and touching off a competition. The engineers straightened the Italian tower from nearly 6 degrees of lean to under 4, ensuring it could remain a tourism hotbed. Now other leaning buildings argue that they are the most leaning building in the world.
The new leader seems to be a tower connected to a church in the village of Suurhusen, in northern Germany. The bright red roof obviously tips away from the church and at 5.19 degrees (as measured in 2007). The Guinness World Records team in London named it the “Farthest Leaning Tower.” But not all Germans aren’t so sure that tower should be named the winner. Then other contenders emerged. At least three other German towers have clamored for the top title.
The German newsmagazine Der Spiegel, in an article last year, listed at least three other German towers it said could contend for the Guinness title. Also, in the Swiss ski resort leans a tower that some say should hold the real claim to the title. The 12th-century structure, known as the tower of St. Mauritius, for a church it once accompanied, not only leans, but also stands on shifting ground that ensures that every few years hydraulic jacks must be called in to straighten it up. Also occasional earthquakes all over the world shaken these towers, making them more slant as well as dangerous. So which tower is the most leaning one in the world? Well, we don’t know it yet. We won’t truly know the new leaning leader until someone starts measuring all the old towers in Europe, but all this talk of towers simply means you have more options to go get your picture taken while you pretend to hold up the leaning tower. However, no matter which one is chosen to be, it will surely write an another page of the world almanac.
